The Challenge

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge spans the windswept waters of Puget Sound, where salt air, driving rain, and constant moisture create an aggressive corrosion environment for exposed steel. To protect this critical infrastructure, Wasser specified and supplied a high-performance moisture-cured urethane system tailored for long-term durability in marine conditions. Following proper surface preparation and abrasive blasting to achieve the required profile and cleanliness.

Why Wasser

MC-Miozinc was applied to provide both barrier protection and galvanic defense. This zinc-rich primer incorporates micaceous iron oxide (MIO) for enhanced film strength and moisture resistance, forming a dense, corrosion-inhibiting foundation directly bonded to the steel substrate.

Together, this three-coat moisture-cured system performs exceptionally well in high-humidity environments, allowing for reliable curing even in less-than-ideal conditions. The result is a durable, tightly sealed coating system that protects the bridge’s structural steel from corrosion, reduces maintenance frequency, and ensures continued performance against the demanding weather patterns of Western Washington.
