The Challenge

The Northwest Thurman Street Bridge required a durable protective coating system capable of withstanding constant exposure to moisture, traffic vibration, and the corrosive effects of an urban environment. With aging steel components and ongoing exposure to the elements, maintaining long-term structural integrity was a key priority for this critical transportation link.

Why Wasser

The Northwest Thurman Street Bridge is a vital transportation link in Portland, Oregon, spanning a railroad corridor in the city’s northwest district. The bridge carries daily vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic and is exposed to moisture, urban pollution, and traffic wear. These conditions make long-term corrosion protection essential for durability and safety.

Wasser's Solution

Wasser Coatings proposed a multi-layer protective coating system to provide long-term corrosion resistance for the steel components of the Northwest Thurman Street Bridge. The system included a MC-Zinc primer at 3–5 mils DFT with MC-zinc stripe coating, followed by MC-Miomastic at 3–5 mils DFT with stripe coating for added durability. A MC-Ferrox A finish coat at 2–4 mils DFT completed the system, delivering lasting protection against environmental exposure and extending the bridge’s service life.
